Dear Mr Stevens, my late father Jack also flew beaufighters for a while in the SAAF in WWII – I have some photos, but can’t send the link in this message box. My father appears with other unknown SAAF personnel in the photos. One photo shows a Beaufighter RD 205 Snake, but the D could be an O if that helps to ID the Squadron. I think he was based mainly in Egypt but spent time in India.

    Hi Steve
Wishing you and your family a Merry and peaceful Christmas. I was a SAAF pilot in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Our tasks were not as onerous as your WW2 combat missions but the WW2 spirit was much admired and formed the basis of our strong camaraderie and esprit de corps. All good things to you and your family sir. Sincerely, Dion van der Merwe, ex Capt. SAAF.

  16. Geoffrey Wulff says:

    Dear Mr. Stevens
I read have your book 2 or 3 times on the exploits of you and your South African colleagues in the SAAF & as part of the Balkan air force & was so relieved that you made it despite many hair raising sorties in your wonderful camera equipped Beaufighters, especially against the Kukkuk in Fiume harbour which I will be visiting and when my wife & self are there we will raise a glass and say a personal prayer to celebrate & give thanks for your long life & your belief in Christ. There are at least two teams working on bringing a Beau back to flying condition and I hope the day will come when the one in Duxford flies again. When it does I will cast my mind back to the SAAF boys who flew these especially yourself.
